Palm Sunday

Pastor Dave spent two weeks teaching about the authority structure ordained by God for the home and the church. He devoted much of his Palm Sunday message to exploring the authority structure within the Trinity, a topic most of us have probably not thought much about. The Son’s submissive obedience to the Father’s plan for our redemption is evident throughout Jesus’ ministry, including the final week we call Holy Week. Dave quoted Scripture to illustrate his assertion that, while God the Father and Jesus the Son are equal in value and essence, they have different roles, with the Son subordinate to the Father. One worthwhile way to observe Holy Week is to reread these verses in context and meditate on them:

The Father’s Authority:
Ephesians 4:6 / the Father is over all
Isaiah 9:6 / a son is given
Romans 8:32 / delivered His Son up

The Son’s Submission:
Hebrews 10:5-7 / come to do Your will
John 4:34 / my food is to do the will
John 5:30 / nothing on my own
Matthew 26:39 / not my will
Philippians 2:8-11 (see sidebar)

Think about, and pray about, where we would be if Jesus had rejected his role as Son and had refused to obey the Father’s will, that he give his life as a ransom for us. Dave used the words beautiful and wonderful and good to describe authority. Do you agree with that description as you ponder the line of authority within the Trinity? Does it help you appreciate and accept the God-ordained authority structures in your own life?

May our Holy Week be saturated with meditation in God’s word, worship, and prayer!

In Christ,
Carol Gilbert
