Palm Sunday
Matthew 21:1-17

Palm Sunday was a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. For the first time, Jesus publicly declared his identity – the long-awaited Messiah-King. He declared himself, not in words, but in actions that specifically fulfilled Old Testament prophecies.

  • By riding on a donkey, he fulfilled Zechariah 9:9-10.
  • By cleansing the temple, he fulfilled Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11.
  • By healing, he fulfilled Isaiah 35:4-6.
  • By receiving the praise of children, he fulfilled Psalm 8:2.

Pastor Dave’s emphasis on the connection between Jesus’ actions on Palm Sunday and Old Testament prophecy is a reminder of the importance of the Old Testament. The Bible is a whole; to properly understand and appreciate one Testament, we must know the other. Ask the Lord to check your Bible for uneven wear. Is the New Testament well-thumbed, underlined, and notated while the Old Testament is pristine? Deep down, do you consider the Old Testament impossibly difficult, confusing, boring, or irrelevant? Ask the Lord to take you on a journey of exploration in the pages of the Old Testament.

Jesus entered Jerusalem, gentle and riding on a donkey, offering peace. Jesus was announcing the time of God’s favor, which continues to this day. However, his offer of salvation and peace with God will not be available forever. One day, still future, there will be another turning point in Jesus’ ministry. He will come again, but on a war horse instead of a peaceful donkey. He will come in fury and judgment and wrath. (Revelation 19:11-16) Lift up by name people you know who have not accepted Jesus’ offer, who are in line for wrath. Ask the Lord to open their hearts to the immensity and urgency of their need for salvation.
