The Peace of Christmas

A pet peeve of mine at Christmas time is cards that tout “Peace on Earth” against a background of national flags. The angelic chorus in Luke 2:14 is not referring to peace between nations but peace for people with whom God is pleased. Pastor Dave taught that the peace of Christmas is peace with God at all times, in every way. How would you define or describe peace? What does it look like? Think about these questions; discuss with a friend.

If I am a Christian, I believe that God is pleased with me because He is pleased with Jesus, who paid for my sin, whose righteousness is credited to me. I am no longer an enemy of God’s; I have peace with Him in Jesus. It’s ironic that, during the Christmas season, our lives are often hectic and harried, not full of peace. Perhaps I’m tied up in knots by expectations about holiday décor inside and out, perfect gifts, scheduling a family photo shoot in time for Christmas cards, homemade cookies, and visits with every member of the extended family. Or perhaps I’m worried about holiday bills or stressed by the demands of a heavier-than-usual work schedule this time of year. Lord, show me how to slow down, step back, and take time to remember who You are and what You have done for me. May the profound peace You give saturate every part of my life every day, starting today – even (and especially) this Christmas season.

Dave listed a number of ways people chase peace but that end instead in carnage, including alcohol and drugs, cutting, suicide, and attempting to change one’s gender. Do you know anyone like that? I think of the 13-year-old girl in foster care I advocate for and mentor. She cuts to find relief and peace (she hopes) from the awful trauma she has experienced. Bring these desperate souls before the Lord, by name if you can, asking Him to draw them to Himself, to shine His light in their lives. Pray that they will hear the good news of Christmas – a Savior born – and finally find real peace.

Dave also spoke of people who think they will find peace in relationships or in worldly success or through religious practices that somehow earn points with God. I’m sure we all know people like that. They would probably be shocked to learn that they are no closer to peace than the drug user and the cutter. Bring these misguided souls before the Lord. Pray that they will encounter and surrender to the Prince of Peace.

Calvary Family

Someone who prefers to remain anonymous asks for prayer for improved physical and financial health. Perhaps this is one of the weary souls mentioned in last week’s blog. We don’t need to know the name and details to pray that God will meet their needs.

Praise God that several of Calvary’s students have had the guts to invite a non-Christian friend to youth group. Pray that these friends will hear God’s voice in the teaching of the Word and experience His caring through the actions of His people.

In Christ,
Carol Gilbert
