Special Edition: The Men of TLC

If you are new at Calvary (and maybe even if you’re not), you may not know about Calvary’s ministry to men seeking freedom from addiction. This residential program – Transitional Living into Community, or TLC – has been part of Calvary for over 20 years. To be accepted into the TLC program, a man must have attained some level of sobriety and stability; we simply don’t have the resources to serve men who are active drug and/or alcohol users and living on the streets. TLC participants learn to submit to the authority of God by submitting to the authority of the program and its leaders. They are expected to be employed or seeking a job, pay program fees, and attend church. The TLC men are considered part of the body at Calvary.

I was privileged to visit the TLC house on Sycamore Street in Brea last week to meet the current residents and talk about how their church body can be praying for them. I met a poet and musician, a man who once aspired to be a professional golfer, a man born in Russia and one born in India to missionary parents, a man raised on a farm in Arkansas, a McNair scholar in botany, a motorcycle enthusiast, a scuba diver, a former EMT, and a former correctional officer. The men range in age from 28 to 65. Some have lived in the TLC house for several years; the “newbie” had been there 49 days. When I expressed surprise that every man seemed to know exactly how long he’d been in the house, one explained that the day each man entered the program was a consequential, pivotal day in his life.

Pray that every man will be fully engaged in our church body, not just attending but also getting to know people through small groups, life groups, and events like the Memorial Day picnic. Pray they will set aside pride and reach out for help from their brothers and sisters in the body. Ask the Lord to help all of us be faithful in prayer for the men of TLC and to show us how to encourage them in their journey of redemption.

In Christ,
Carol Gilbert
