Genesis 29:31 – 30:24
Jacob’s Children

Jacob’s two wives had legitimate problems. Leah felt great sadness because her husband did not love her. Rachel was disappointed because she was barren. But their problems did not drive them toward God. They ran in the opposite direction, enlisting servants in their baby contest and resorting to “magic” mandrakes. Let’s resolve before the Lord that whatever problems we face, we will persistently pursue God, not turn aside and go our own way.

Jesus, the Savior, came from this dysfunctional clan! He was born in the line of Judah, Jacob’s son #4. Praise God that, in the midst of human failure and sin that spread through multiple generations, He worked out His incredible plan of redemption. His purpose could not be thwarted.

By way of introduction, Pastor Dave acknowledged that we may grow sick and tired of slogging through chapter after unpleasant chapter in the history of Abraham’s messed-up family. We’d rather hear something uplifting, something encouraging! My small group has had a similar discussion as we get deeper into the unremitting depression of Job. Ask the Lord to brace us for what we need to hear and to soften our hearts to receive whatever He wants to teach us.

Calvary Family

Thirteen-year-old Brenden Estell was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes about a week ago. Pray for Brenden and the whole family as they learn about this disease and how to manage it. Ask the Lord to help them weather the frustrations that will come and to recognize His blessings in the midst of challenging circumstances.

Lift up Pastor Jan Tomczyk’s visit next weekend. Pray that we will be an encouragement to him and that he will increase our understanding of Poland and concern for the Polish people. Our Missions Council and elders will be meeting with Pastor Jan to discuss the needs of the church in Poland and further opportunities for Calvary to help. Pray for open and constructive conversation and for the Lord’s leading.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Will you be spending time with someone who needs to experience the love of God or hear the truth of the gospel? Begin to pray for that person and ask the Lord how He might want to use you.

In Christ,
