Genesis 27:30-46

The failures of Yahweh’s earliest covenant partners – the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – point out humanity’s desperate need for a Savior to institute a new covenant. We sinners are incapable of being faithful covenant partners and of transforming ourselves into a holy people. Only Jesus can do those things, on our behalf. Take some time to express to the Lord your gratitude for the beauty and power of the gospel.

God seems absent from the Genesis 27 narrative, but His sovereign will is clearly present, overshadowing all. We Christians seek God’s will, asking Him for specific answers to specific questions like, “Should I take this job? Marry this person?” Maybe our focus is too narrow. We know from the Bible God’s will for us: to be the kind of person and live the kind of life that is wholly conformed to Jesus. Before the Lord, commit to live out today the part of God’s sovereign will you do know, whether He answers your specific questions or not.

The words Isaac spoke over Jacob were a blessing that was real and substantive with power behind it, not a mere wish. Our words can powerfully affect the people around us too, for good or ill. Do they bless others, or do they curse? Are they constructive, edifying the hearer, or are they destructive? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pay close attention to your words and their effects today.

Thank God for our Pastoral Care Team, led by Leroy Sissom and Anna Sanchez. This team of about half a dozen people makes hospital visits and arranges meals and other practical help for people in times of need. Ask God to encourage and strengthen them in this important ministry.

Pray for the many volunteers who are signing up to serve at Fall FunFest. Ask the Lord to prepare each one to actively reach out with a warm welcome to all visitors as an expression of God’s love.

As Pastor Todd led us in communion on Sunday, he gave us a few moments to silently confess our sins to God. We can only confess the sins of which we are aware. I suspect that those sins are only the tip of the iceberg. Praise God for graciously cleansing His children even of the sins of which we are blithely unaware.

In Christ,
