Genesis 26:17-35
The God of Abraham

God didn’t call Himself “the God of Abraham” or orchestrate the events of Isaac’s life to echo events of his father’s life because Abraham, not Isaac, was His first-best favorite. Rather, He wanted Isaac to know that He, Yahweh, was the same God, unchanged by the passage of human time and generations. Take time today to praise the Lord for his changelessness. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Pastor Dave noted that in today’s culture, some want to redefine or reinvent God. They say, “I want a god who lets me live the way I want, marry whomever I want, even decide my own gender.” It’s easy to be angry at people who reject the God of the Bible and despise them. Instead, let’s pray for them as spiritual P.O.W.’s (to use a phrase I heard Jim Daly use on the radio last week). Pray that they will encounter the true and living God of Abraham.

Ask the Lord for discernment for all of us to know the difference between changes in the expression of worship and the externals of church life versus efforts to recast God as someone He’s not. Ask Him for the ability to accept the former with grace and steadfastly resist the latter.

Here is an update from Pastor Shannon:  Thank you for all the cards, meals, prayers and concern that you have showed to our family during this unexpected time in our lives. It has been just over 3 weeks since all that has happened. All things considered, I am doing very well. There have been a lot of new things to get used to, but I am feeling better and stronger every day (both my heart and my back). God has been kindly teaching us many things during this time, but not all of them are easy to learn. As Hebrews 12 tells us: "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." There will be days ahead that will not be easy, so please continue to pray for our family that God will produce the good things that he desires as he continues to teach each of us. It is so good to be a part of Calvary and to be supported and cared for the way we have been.

The church received a note recently from retired missionaries Al and Pat Pence thanking us for our faithful financial support. Remember to pray for these servants of the Lord.

In Christ,
Carol Gilbert
